Phase-3 of Bengaluru Metro Greenlit: 31 New Stations Across Two Elevated Corridors
The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has greenlit Phase-3 of the Bangalore Metro Rail Project, introducing two elevated corridors spanning 44.65 km and comprising 31 stations. Corridor-1 will stretch 32.15 km from JP Nagar 4th Phase to Kempapura, following the Outer Ring Road West and including 22 stations. Corridor-2 will cover 12.50 km from Hosahalli to Kadabagere along Magadi Road, with 9 stations.
Once Phase-3 is operational, Bengaluru will boast a 220.20 km Metro Rail Network. The total estimated cost of the project is Rs 15,611 crore.
This phase marks a significant milestone in Bengaluru’s infrastructure development, greatly expanding the city’s Metro Rail Network. Phase-3 will add 44.65 km of new lines, enhancing connectivity to western areas of Bengaluru that were previously underserved. It will link key regions, including Peenya Industrial Area, IT hubs along Bannerghatta Road and Outer Ring Road, and manufacturing zones on Tumkuru Road and ORR. It will also connect major institutions such as PES University, Ambedkar College, and Dayanandsagar University. This phase will improve access to the southern part of the city, Outer Ring Road West, Magadi Road, and various neighborhoods, thereby enhancing overall city connectivity. Improved last-mile connectivity to commercial centers, industrial hubs, educational institutions, and healthcare facilities will provide residents with better access.
The reduced travel time and improved connectivity are expected to boost productivity, allowing people to reach their workplaces more efficiently. Additionally, the construction and operation of Phase-3 will create numerous jobs across various sectors, from construction to administration and maintenance. The enhanced connectivity is also likely to stimulate local businesses near the new metro stations and attract investments to previously less accessible areas.
Multi-modal integration is planned at 10 key locations, including JP Nagar 4th Phase, JP Nagar, Kamakya, Mysore Road, Sumanahalli, Peenya, BEL Circle, Hebbal, Kempapura, and Hosahalli. These locations will provide interchanges with existing and under-construction Metro Stations, BMTC bus stands, Indian Railway stations, and proposed Suburban (K-RIDE) stations.
All Phase-3 stations will feature dedicated bus bays, pick-up and drop-off zones, pedestrian paths, and IPT/auto-rickshaw stands. BMTC’s feeder bus service, currently servicing operational metro stations, will be extended to Phase-3 stations. Parking facilities will be available at 11 major stations. Phase-1 and Phase-2 stations will be integrated with those of Phase-3, ensuring seamless connectivity through FoBs and skywalks to two railway stations, Lottegollahali and Hebbal. Additionally, provisions for bike and cycle-sharing facilities will be included at Phase-3 metro stations.
